COMMUNITY: Connect Counselling
Connect Counselling came into our lives before You Are Collective was even a brainstorm. They used to be called the Kelowna Family Center and when I first moved here, I was referred to their no-fee services as I was looking for support. I had to wait a month and to be honest, I forgot I had a referral in until I got the call and I was ecstatic. Help was on its way. I've since been a patient, Michael and I have been there as a couple, and we are so grateful to be partnering with them for the beginning of the #1MillionCampaign to fund 1,000,000 counselling sessions across Canada. So far we've been able to fund 33 one-hour sessions thanks to YOU!
Connect Counselling strives to be a safe, open, inclusive, non-discriminatory space for everyone no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity. Individuals are cared for from one on one to group therapy to couples sessions and to people of any age! With more than 3,600 counselling hours accumulated over 2018-2019, this non-profit society has been part of our community since 1986!
The office has transitioned to online and virtual counselling to be able to service the needs of the community during these times. Connect Counselling responds to community needs by fostering well-being and healthy relationships through skilled counselling services. Their guiding principles include collaboration, feminism, client centeredness, respect, and inclusiveness.
One thing the Executive Director, Roxie Aller, has always been adamant about is their desire to help and support anyone who connects with them. Even if there is a waitlist or they can't provide someone counselling instantly, they will work together to find a solution or resource to utilize in the meantime. I've always felt supported from the moment I walk into the building actually, there is a true sense of energy there that everyone wants to help. Everyone is there to make a difference.
