We started the idea of doing this video thinking it was kind of a 10 facts style. We've had a lot of new faces and questions about us + You Are Collective so we wanted to share, in our own words, a bit about us!
So I totally get the risk factors but why do I have to change out of and give up everything I own and wear just because I'm mentally ill. I felt like I had some sort of contagious disease. I get the strings/belt/anything I might be carrying... But my clothes??? That night I felt destroyed. Singled out in society as a subject in a hospital that doesn't really know what to do with the abundance of mentally ill patients....
An open mic night - centered around mental health and illness. People can come to share their stories, a song, a poem, a dance, a rant ... Whatever is on their heart. In a space where they're supported, understood, heard, and cared for. A community.
Do I want to go for another month and a half with no hope in sight? Constantly shaking, vibrating, tense, grinding my teeth, clenching my fists, being so sick in the mornings, nauseous throughout the rest of the day, not sleeping, lack of appetite... Or do I want to try something where maybe in the next 4-6 weeks my symptoms will become less constant?
Their recent launch of the #SPEAKOUT campaign has given a glimpse into the devastating realities around getting help in a timely manner and the lack of availability we're able to support as a community. It also highlights the incredible programs that are around and constantly trying to grow, but they need your help.
